I'm new to streaming for the Internet, and I need to know what software I need to stream video from a DVD. As info, my DVD player is housed in my computer.

Any help you can give me would be appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to WebmasterWorld ginagina5
This isn't really how it's done. Your footage should be in a different format for it to be efficient. What exactly do you want to achieve?

I want to stream video on a web page. The video footage is currently being captured on VHS and on DVD, and I'd like to use snippets from the video on a web page.

Since I can load a DVD on my computer, I thought I would be able to create a streaming media file from the DVD.

How best should I handle extracting a video clip for streaming over the Internet?

Thanks!

Hi ginagina5
This is a lot easier than you might think, but rather than me waffling on for hours about it: check THIS LINK [mediacollege.com] for all you need to know, plus tutorials.

Thank you so much for the link.

I have already streamed audio, so it would seem I could just pull the video file from my DVD into the encoder. The problem I'm having is that I don't want to stream the entire thing, since it's two hours long. I want to extract clips from it, but I don't believe my encoder will allow me to do that once I pull the entire file in.

Any thoughts on how I could extract clips from the DVD?

Thanks again for all your prompt and helpful information!

I don't know what video editor you are using, but you may need to get a bit of software that "backs up" DVD. What that actually means is converting the DVD structure (ifos and vobs) into 1 multiplexed file like MPEG1 (for VCDs). Then you can open it in your editor, cut out sections you want to stream, and re-encode them as Quicktime or Realmedia etc. Then add them to your page and link to them. What is your target audience? I hope it's not people on a Dial-up!

if you google for "doom9" you'll end up on a page that will answer all your video questions

streaming a dvd would involve converting it to a windows media - quicktime - realplayer format, and then inserting code to embed this video in your webpage

most homepages for the different formats will explain in detail the code to <embed> their files. just google for "embed real media" or "embed windows media"

ulead makes good software for extracting scenes from video material. you can get a trial download before you decide to spend

First of all, you need what type of file you want to convert from DVD to, if you want the format in .avi then in google search for "DVD to AVI CONVERT" .They will list a lot of site there. Also you can cut the file into small files to choose which file to broadcast. Also I recommend using [real.com....]
The last is that I can do the work completely for low price.

Thanks to all who have responded. This is excellent information. I have the encoders but had no idea what to do with the file on the DVD.

I'm determined to learn how to do this, so I'll work with the information you all have provided. Thanks again, all!
