I have several images that varry in size and resolution. Some are as big as 2000x200 (5 megapixels) and smaller ones at 144 x 966. However when I open the larger files PhotoShop says the image is 72 DPI, but I am able to print an 8x10 photo perfect.

My confusion/question is how is the resolution number determined? I know and understand the different resolutions but not following why PS defaults to a differnt number.

Think I may have confused myself here, but hopefully someone can pull out what I am asking and help.

Thanks

I think you are confusing the image size at print with the actual image size on disc ..it is possible to have these two independant of each other if you have ticked "shrink to fit" or something similar in your print setup dialogue .

The pixel dimension and the print size are independent. In PS7 help search: "About image size and resolution"

You will find a very thorough explanation.
