Convert DVD video to MPEG or similar

What is a free and reputable way to convert DVD to web-friendly formats?

Hi there

I'm doing a pro-bono website for a local school who have had a DVD made about their college. I don't have any video editing tools on my Win XP computer except for Windows Movie Maker, but I need to convert the DVD into MPEG or WMV or Quicktime or some other format so that people can download it off the site.

Can anyone recommend a free and reputable way to do this?

Presently the only potentially helpful software I have is InterVideo WinDVD, Windows Movie Maker 2.0 and Windows Media Player (although my version is not DVD-enabled).

ulead videostudio, you can get a fully functioning trial from their site

im not sure if it can do dvd - wmv, but it can handle alot of formats. the other day i used it to capture vhs and encode to wmv

doom9.org has all the guides and free software to encode the dvd to something that videostudio can handle

Over at Macromedia, they offer a trial of Flash, probably the best compression you would get for streaming video and no back end support required.

From going from dvd to mpeg i recommend using tmpge (guides @ www.dvdrhelp.com) but for live streaming mpeg might be too big, you could as suggested import it into flash but that won't make much difference, try a smaller format like quicktime files.
