We need to take photographs of fabrics which are black (or dark colored) silk with similar colored patterns on them.

Any tips on how to go about doing this with a fairly decent digital camera or processing them with photoshop CS?

The photos will be used in thumbnails and large sized (500x500) images.

Look in lighting methods. Where you have large areas of simliar contrasting materials, a well positioned lamp will make all the difference. Dappled light is another effect that is good way to visually depict forms that don't describe themselves.

Take the very best photograph you can - it is much easier to improve on a good photo than trying to acheive the impossible with an poor image later on.
