tricky one to pull off convincingly, particuarily as the starting image is black.

i would try making (and saving ;)) a selection that covers the area of the bodywork you want to color. then create a new layer and fill your selection with a deep red.
then play around with the layer blending modes (where it says 'normal' at the top of the layer pallette). you could try starting by setting the blend mode to 'color' to see how that looks (n.b. youll need a much deeper red to start with than you intend to end up with for the color blend mode)

youll probably have to duplicate you color layer and build up a combination of blending modes to get a good results - just experiment.

good luck.

p.s. welcome to webmasterworld!

1. Polygonal mask to isolate the car (As close as you can. Doesn't have to be perfect)
2. Color range. (set fuzziness to 0 initially) Click a few areas of the car and depending on the picture you can drag across it here and there. Then use the fuzziness to bring out what you want.
3. Hue/saturation to change it to whatever color you like.
