I want a colored rectangle to fade from dark blue to a almost transparent blue from bottom to top. Ho wis this done? What tool is used? thanks.

Use the gradient tool located on the tool pallet.
If your paint bucket tool is showing, click on it and the gradient tool should appear in a drop down menu.

You can alter and enhance the gradient by using the options within the fill palette. you change/add colours, change the style of the fill and add other tweaks.
