I really like the thumbnail gallery idea in the following Thumbnail Slideshow applet by 6sense. (look them up since we're not supposed to post an URL)
Only thing the applet seems to be unpredictible in Netscape 4.7 or just doesn't work. I was wondering if anyone knew of a similar applet or any approach (except flash) that could provide the same visual effect without reloading the whole html page. I like how zooming into an image doesn't require loading a different html page.

I took a look at the applet and it is cool, but not as smooth as if it was done in Flash. I am curious, why do you not want to use flash for this? You might be able to use DHTML to script this out, but im not an expert in DHTML so you would have to do some research on that.

I don't want to use flash because, this site is aimed at an audience that won't know what to do if the flash player isn't installed on their computer. I'm talking a rural and over 50 years old audience not especially computer literate. This is for a farm website.

I see, I dont know of anything specifically that will meet your needs. One thing to consider if you cant find a solution. Your assumption of whether your audience has flash or not may not be accurate. Just something to consider, Flash has an over 90% market saturation. It is standard in all 5.0 browsers and later and also is very easy to install if it is not installed. Just something to consider. Good Luck. If you want more stats on Flash saturation go here:

If what you are saying about your audience is true then I strongly suggest agianst an applet. There are even less people who will be able to see it. I would either look at using DHTML like said above or going even lower tech if you are supporting older browsers. I would say flash would be your ticket considering the penetration numbers, but if you don't want to use it then I think an applet is even less of an option.

There is a pretty cool javascript solution called scroller Genie. If you do a search you should come up with a few leads and examples.

This is a paid solution, however. On the other hand it's very customizable and unique.

To my knowledge there is not a zoom feature that comes with it, but it should be possible with a few added javascript functions.

disclaimer: I am in no way related with this product. 8~P
