Two seemingly big problems here.

a) If the bottom half of the photo is black, and I want it to fade into a black background: I can always see the photo boundaries...even when I extract that part of the photo and fill it in with a Web safe color (#000 in this example).

Is there a better way to make is seem more seamless?

b) What is the best way to extract complicated elements from photos? For example: hair and tree limbs/branches.

Thanks for any help!

a) Are you sure the color of the photo is black (RGB 0,0,0), not 10,10,10 or something nearly black?

b) You can do the opposite: instead of selecting complicated things, try selecting and altering the background.

Well, I figure that since it's a photo, it might not be exaclty #000. But when I select the background and then fill it in with #000, it should match up with the webpage background #000...right?
