In Fireworks MX I am trying to get text the same colour as the background of a photograph and then emboss it to make it stand out... but with no luck.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Duplicate the background layer. Hide original layer. On new duplicare layer, type text in white. Select both the text and the bg. Modify menu - mask - group as mask. Apply emboss. Unhide orig. layer.

I was curious and couldn't get that method to work :( (FW4?)

You could alternativley deselect the 'show object' tick box in the emboss pop up menu under the effects tab. This works with all effects to render the fill colour transparent.

I'll have a crack at both of those and then report back, thanks :)

Thanks Limbo and scottmack. I went with Limbo's method and it looks good.
