Hi,

I was wondering if my various websites should have a privacy policy page somewhere to garantee our customers that we won't sell their info. I use forms to gather info and I understood that it might be required.

  • Is it a legal requirement (I'm in the UK)?
  • What should I put in?
  • Is there a template or a authority site that I could look at?

    Thanks for your help.

Re tempaltes... I went to waht I consider the "big one" in my industry andtook theirs, replaced their company name with mine. Then I send em an email asking if I could use theirs (it was the whole terms of service, copyright, privacy policy deal). ever got a reply. For the fun of it I looked for a sentence in google and found no less then 35 sites who used almost the same text word for word (just ommiting different sections) and it wasn't clear if the "gib one" was even the original auther. furthermore, the other users of this very document were direct competitors in my own locality as well as in many other countries.

Needless to say I just used the damn thing as well.

So have a look around, and if the top50 of your industry use the same legal document, it might just be good and suitable as "template"

There are a few places you can pick up a whole batch of legal docs ..privacy, T+C, Website sales etc for under few hundred pounds. We're just looking at these to see if the one-fits-all will provide adequate cover. Custom built docs will cost thousands....we just had several quotes.

Sticky me if you'd like details. :)

The DMA has a privacy policy generator on its site, which may give you some pointers.

On a related note, anyone implented p3p on their website? Pros/Cons?

A few links that may be helpful:

    W3C's P3P deployment guide at [w3.org...]
    W3C P3P Web site at [w3.org...]
    IBM P3P policy editor: [alphaworks.ibm.com...]

Working through the process with the IBM editor the first time is rather confusing, but you can review the HTML policy output to see where you need more work.
