SSL Certficate Installation Charge

Is this atypical?

A new client with an existing site reports that they're due to renew their verisign ssl cert and that over and above the cost of the certificate they are being charged $300 for installation by their hosting service.

I've been involved with more than a few e commerce sites and this is the first time I've run across an amount like this for installation. Last one was free as a matter of fact. Is this way out of line?

Well, it depends. The reality is that installing a cert takes about 5 minutes - 10 if you include generating the initial key to send off for matching. So $300 for 10 minutes work?

On the other-hand. If the website owner has no clue as to how to do it, even if the host has made a tool available to them to use so they can do it themselves, then perhaps the high price is a nuisance charge.

But if you know how to do it and the host is simply insisting on doing the install themselves - I'd argue with them about it or move the site.

$300 is the steepest installation fee I've run across. The typical range I find seems to be free to under $100.

Thanks. Not only is the option not available to the site owner, the host insists on doing it.

I think it's really high.

Welcome, marlow, but you might want to remove the URL drop from your post...

Follow-up: I talked to a representative of the host (without mentioning the $300 fee) and they will be charging the appropriate amount for the time it takes based on their rather high hourly rate. Still, won't be any $300!
