A type of webmaster business...will this work?

A new twist I was thinking of trying (is this new?)

It seems like there are many, many people out there willing to build websites for you. I personally do not have all of the skills necessary to be a top-notch website designer (especially artistically). However, I do have many contacts with small business people who need websites. The websites I want to supply to them are beyond my artistic ability. In addition, actually building the website is probably not something I want to be wasting my time on.

What if:
1) I subcontracted out the initial web design to any of a number of firms of my choosing. As part of the contract, these companies/individuals would not place any kind of link or ad on the designed site that leads back to themselves. In other words, all business referrals (based on the quality of the site) would come back to me.

2) I would do several things for the client:
- select reliable and inexpensive hosting
- select quality web design services
- select and provide advanced visitor tracking services
- select vendors for and/or custom-design any special site features
- investigate any service outages
- continually look for cheaper and/or more reliable hosting
- provide advice on what to do to improve the promotional effects of the site, improve conversion rates, email marketing, etc.

Do you think this would work, or do you see any holes in it?

this is probably what 75% of New Media companies already do.

NOT saying it doesnt work, but things go wrong, remember its YOUR neck on the line, not the cheap designers or developers.

My advice to you... Unless you are already established as a professional business with many clients, don't try to get into the web design business if you cannot do all of those things already... there are already many great web design businesses that take care of all of this, so why would a customer go to someone who is just starting out who gets other companies to do the work, when the customer can go right to the other companies?

I think it may work.

You would be functioning as a sort of "general contractor". Like in the real world, when you build a house, the GC may know how to do all the things necessary to build a house, he/she would most likely subcontract and supervise.
But, I also agree that most developers already do this at some level. You would need to define exactly what the advantage is in using you.

Simplifying the entire process comes to mind.

You might want to reconsider your wording ... something besides "wasting" would convey a much better tone ...
