Can you survive on the generosity of visitors to your site

Webmasterworld is contributionware. Relying mainly ( i suppose) on contributions from users. I was wondering if anyone else had tried it and how it has worked out for them.

I care for a couple of sites offering shareware. Most of them switch to cripleware or time limited demos. I saw some vertical market applications (low copy distribution) selling at + 1 000 $ a copy having to shut down because of costumer support fees.

So, my short answer is no.
