What do you think, when you see a 866 number? I mean, do most people know that 866 is also a toll free number like 800?

I think most folks know. Even if they aren't sure it seems to me that they would try dialing the number without the 1 to see if it connects. ;)

Got lucky yesterday though and got a real live 800 number for a new business.

Ive noticed many radio and tv ads say 'its a toll-free call' when they have 866 and stuff. so maybe stick that somewhere Toll-Free: 866 - xxx - xxxx

I didn't know but then I live in a mostly rural state. I would have guessed had it been provided with a local number.

Having done some incoming call center work, I wouldn't be so sure that people know 866 is toll free. When taking calls for a state no-call list telemarketers are required to buy if calling IN, nearly half the people I talked to didn't even know what their area code was, or that their phone number has more than 7 digits. I don't know how you can reach adulthood without knowing those things, but apparently people do. 866 for toll-free calls is new enough that I'd deffinitely put some notice in any add copy letting people know it's a toll-free number.
