Anyone tried "group discounts"?

Hi folks:

In order to reach more clients, we're considering contacting various clubs and local business organizations and offering "group discounts" on web site design services, particularly on some small business packages we're fine-tuning.

Has anyone had experience with this? I know when you're doing "affinity marketing" you offer the Group's Organization a cut of each sale - Let's say 7% of each sale to the Organization... So if the local Chamber of Commerce lets their membership know about you, you send them 7% back for every one of their members that buys from you. In this case, who would assume the responsibility for advertising? Let's say the Chamber put your discount in their monthly flyer or mailing list: would you normally pay for that too, or for a portion of it?

I would think Group Discounts would almost work the other way: Organizations would approach you, and if they could provide a set # of sales (say 10 sales), you'd offer them a group discount. I was wondering if we could approach various groups and offer a group discount in return for free advertising in their flyers: (they get to look good in front of their members, we get in front of a targetted audience). But maybe you'd have to pay for access here, too?

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I would see the main problem being finding an organisation that would be interested in finding the time to go out to all their members and drum up business. I tried a similar sort of thing and it just seemed to die in a fit of apathy. Although if you have such an organisation then go for it because nothing is better for this business than good word of mouth.

Many people are unsure about the growing number of choices on the internet so someone saying " Use them, I did and everythings fine" is a powerful tool.

What I did find useful was when I did a site for a local community based organisation at a reduced fee on the basis that I could use their name, reputation and quickly popular site to sell the quality of my services to their associates. "Hi, my names X I'm phoning you about the website I did for the head office etc" sort of idea.

At the very least if you can get a good reputation at the top and be prepared to canvas your way around I am sure there is some milage in this idea. The sit back while people bring you business idea might just have a future you know...
