Start visiting search engines and submitting your site. Look for a "submit site", or "add url" option. Some of the bigger search engines:
google.com, altavista.com, alltheweb.com, hotbot.com, teoma.com, wisenut.com, lycos.com...

It varies greatly. Most sites see a larger percentage of traffic when brand new. The ratio for SE referrals lowers as you gain more and more repeat visitors and outside referrals. Some established sites see about 25% of their total traffic come from the search engines.
After your site is listed there the search engines will come to you. Good luck.
take a peak for example at tiggers user profile if your site is a business in the south of england his site may help you.
do a search for your product and town in google then find thier add url or email them direct link exchange really works well.
if you are not listed in Inktomi then pay the reaper.
