Links to and from clients

With the onslaught/importance of "relevant" links has anyone got any thoughts about linking to and from client sites and search engine positioning.

Do links from your client sites help?
Does linking to your clients have a reverse effect both on your site and theirs.

I can say with certainty that links from client sites pass PR. That may or may not have anything to do with ranking.

It is illogical to think that links to a client's site would harm either.

There are many reasons for legit links. Examples of a portfolio would (or should) be just as legit as any other citation.

Of course, the SE's are not always logical.
