As we all know, many have and/or are implementing measures to prevent UCE (Unsolicitied Commercial Email) from reaching their inboxes. The products being used are not perfect by any means but they do a very good job of minimizing the amount of UCE received.

One of the biggest problems we face as users of email is our messages being flagged as Spam. The software used to determine if a message is Spam or not is highly complex and uses a multitude of factors and mathematical formulas.

This message is just a reminder to all, be very careful in how you construct your outgoing messages. If you want them to make it through the Spam filters and to the recipient, there are certain measures you need to take to make sure that happens. One of them is writing effective Email Subject Lines.

Not only is this useful to get your email through the gates, it is an important step in the marketing process. Your emails should be constructed and optimized just as you were building a web page. Think of the Email Subject Line as your <h1> on a web page.

On a side note, I tend to get people sending me email from a mobile device. Sometimes they are in such a hurry that they fail to put in a subject line. Our Barracuda firewalls will flag those messages as Spam, in a heartbeat (unless they are on my Whitelist). Empty Subject Lines are at the top of the list of things to get flagged. There are other criteria being looked at with the Subject Line being a primary factor.

Excellent and timely advice.

I'd just like to add the following:

Imagine someone wishes to send an email with the following subject:

Please buy Viagra from us

1 - Don't give away the goods! If you tell people your whole message in your subject, it means you've wasted your effort writing a lovely letter.

About your pills

2 - When writing a subject line, make sure it grabs the eye, the best way to do this is by adding nonsense characters at the end.

3 - It is essential that inquisitive visitors are drawn into reading your message, there's no benefit in them only seeing the subject line. Do this by interchanging numbers with letters, and adding punctuation where it doesn't normally belong.

4 - If you don't think the reader wants to read your email, try writing a subject that describes something they do want to read. People care about missed deadlines, lost cheques, and things like that.

5 - To ensure a touch of individuality, try adding random words to the end of this. This shows that you have taken the time to come up with something original, breaking the boredom of email life.

6 - Finally, people like to know which of their email addresses an email was sent to (remember some people foward emails from different boxes to a single box). Help them by taking the first part of their email (before the @) and putting it in the subject.
