Even when I give them the URL for my website or give them my contact details I still never hear from them (a business card could be lost as easily I suppose.)
There are still a lot of people who don't own a computer and have no interest in making their own website (at least I seem to meet them all the time), so am I just talking to the wrong people?
A different approach is required for 'cold emailing' - and you gotta think when extracting email addresses or using email lists, those at the other end are fresh prospects and ARE strangers and thus a different email pitch is necessary to engage them. There are NO secrets! Hocus Pocus zib zap bib and hey presto, magic money...... hehehe. I imagine you used the word 'secret' to highlight some kind of technique wanted to catch people's attention?
Nobody will do this for you, and anyone offering any secrets for free is full of bull anyway - just be careful who you get as a copywriter. You need to get good at writing your own adverts as you'll save a ton of cash by doing it.
Never ever hire anybody unless you get so much work that you cannot physically handle it yourself. Advert writing is such an art, and is costly because you have 2 things to think about:
1. The advert itself and monitoring every single one!
2. Advertising costs.......
If either one of the above is badly done it'll affect the other one. PPC is the best solution here as Google let's you cancel and begin new ads easily, which is a big big advantage. It lets you test a ton of ads at low cost before sinking a ton of cash into a campaign. ------ but, you still have to write the copy and so many do this badly and simply don't get the results they could be getting by engaging a professional. Google knows this, and is where it makes a fortune from the badly written ads, just because an ad isn't performing, doesn't mean it gets removed! A lot of people STILL run ineffective adverts, and worse than that, they are still paying for them! This is insane. Take a look for yourself in the Google results, I bet you'll find at least 3 very bad adverts.
You need to get good at this and that's the secret. Practice Practice.....
