Hi, now we want to find a web design company with good reputation to design a website for our small business. We just wonder if there are any groups or organizations that will rank the qualities of different web design companies so that we can make a decision based on their ranks. We have checked CNET but cannot find any ranks on web design companies.

Why wouldn't you just look at the portfolio for the company? Their past work should give you a good idea of what to expect. I doubt there is a site like you describe. If there is, I don't think it would be very useful anyway. It would be too easy to skew the results.

The problem of searching on Google.com and check the portfolio will be:
1. There are so many web design companys in the search results and it will take a lot of time to evaluate them. We want to get a shortlist and then check them carefully to minimize the time spent.

2. We have no idea of whether a portfolio is good or not because we are not artists. Moreover, what we think good may not be good to our customers, whose feelings are more important then ours.

Firstly catles20, Welcome to WW.

We have no idea of whether a portfolio is good or not because we are not artists

You couldn't be more removed from what is important in a website, IMHO. Art is one thing. Making your website work for you (and your visitors) is something else.

If you want your website to look pretty, then spend 5 hours talking to your designer. If you want your website to benefit your business, then spend 5 hours reading the library on this forum. First and foremost you need to be clear in your head what you want from the website before you start looking for designers. Then you can sort the wheat from the chaff.

Most of our new clients originate from existing client referals. If you have a few favorite sites you may consider contacting the owners to find out who developed the site. That gives you the opportunity to talk with an "end-user" before getting the sales pitch.
