Do people that work for Direct Marketers have trouble finding "legitimate" work?

Would a reference from a Direct Marketing company be just as good as a reference from any other technology/marketing company?

Depends how you define the line between spamming and direct marketing - if you're talking about the legal side of the industry (paper mailings, opt-in emails etc) then you shouldn't have a problem as you're essentially looking at straight marketing experience.

When you step past the legal area and into the more "grey area" then you might have problems, it just depends how you market yourself.

So what if you were a spammer in a previous job? You did what you were told and as a result the company made money, hard to argue a business case against hiring a person like that.

I wouldn't ever spam here ..too much respect for the place ..

Yep. But since the word spammer was used, I asked myself if I would hire some one who was involved in sending all those Vi@gra, diet pills, porn, etc ads that plague enterprises and have turned into such a drain on the finances of organizations everywhere.

Hire one of them?

I would have to restrain myself from loudly giving them a piece of my mind before escorting them to the door.

To anyone who I have just offended: I am quite sure the garbage you send to me constantly is more offensive.
