Ever consider competitive intelligence? It's an amazing advantage. Highlight a desired account (more biz from existing, or perhaps one your competitor has now...) and taregt them for an "investigation" (you can hire people to do it or do it yourself).
Find out everything you can. Pretty soon you'll know how their heart beats, and then just predict the nest step and see what happens.
Example 1: you call to pitch a client on the day after he's internally anounced a downsizing and exit from a market due to heardships. Bad luck.. or sloppy timing?
Example 2: you learned that Univ of Whatever has submitted a letter of intent to compete for a big Cancer research grant from the government. Grant proposals are due May 1st. Grants will be awarded September 1st. They are considered a leader in cancer research, and have big name doctors. You can see their current website is so poorly done it is a joke. You pitch the doctors in early March, suggesting you could handle their web systems for them. You hit them again in early April with some free ideas for how they might use the web as part of their project, and offer you assistance in advance of their submission. If they are at all interested, you'll get called.
