I am interested in starting a small data center as well, but I'm not sure what I would need in order to start something like that. Because of legal, money, and zoning law issues that I have to go through in order to start something so small. I've also wanted to start a small web hosting business even if just a small cable modems one, even though you wouldn't be able to do much because cable is a much slower connection. But because of the zoning laws, I'm not sure if an online computer business must follow the same.
If you were to pull a loan from a bank out, approx how much should I pull out in order to start?
============================
S-Corp = $200+/-
Internet = $unknown yet
Security = $unknown yet
Software = $unknown yet
Legal = $unknown yet
============================
Permits
========
Fire & Safety
Air & Filter
Temp. Control

anything besides these?

Thanks,
Daniel

Are you planning on running this from your home? In the U.S., many businesses can be run from home without any zoning problems, as long as you don't need to have a ton of customers coming all the time, semi trucks bringing deliveries, or other similar activity that's likely to disturb a residential area. If you can run this from your home, and also don't need to worry about zoning, your last three items are probably superfluous (except for whatever safety/security concerns you may personally have).

WARNING: I am not a lawyer, and this post is not, and is not intended to be, legal advice. I see that you mentioned legal fees as one of your items; I suggest you get some legal advice before assuming anything about starting your business! :)

Rather than take the plunge completely and invest in premises and kit, why not rent server space rather than buying it, There are a whole load of companies that will rent you seamless services. 24 hour support, secure data center, remote backup ups, and probably most importantly they will provide a properly engineered environment, cooling, security etc...

When you have established your market and customer base then you could think about going it alone.

Revenue first, is the mantra!

Matthew: Thanks for your advice, yes I am planning on starting it at home. The only times that a truck would be coming through would be to drop racks off.... which as you know would be rair. I'm also interested in getting a loan, and I was wanting to know approx how much would be good to request for, in your opinion.
