Countries it is illegal for UK businesses to trade with

Anyone know where to find a list?

I spent a fair while trying to establish whether it was legally OK to do business with a company based in a certain country this morning.

Our business is based in the UK ... does anybody know where there is an up to date list of countries that it isn't a good idea to trade with?

As I understand it, as long as your not selling anything on a restricted export list...ummm like....Plutonium.... or weapons or anything with a security grading then you can do business with anyone you like.

As far as commercial requirements are concerned you do have to think about local factors in your target market. Some countries are not members of the WTO eg. Many Middle East countries and of course Russia. Business in the these countries is done by middle men,"Agents", and getting paid can be a nightmare.

Finally another great source of info is your local Chamber of Commerce, they have export specialists who will do the leg work for you, as long as your a member.

I just meant that there might be certain areas/businesses that it's a bad idea to do business with, though it is perfectly legal. Just a bad pun on "good idea"...
