Continuity of Business Plan?

What do you use?

I have a few web "businesses" running and in the past have had huge losses due to server failures. Each time I would pick my self back up and start again (and be better about backing up).

Now I have a pretty darn good back up strategy and am confident that I could get things up and running within 24 hours if I had another failure.

I have not, however, put together a continuity of business plan which seems to be all the craze in big business.

Has anyone put one together? Used one? Found them useful?

Rather than a full plan, what I usually do is set small goals and deadlines for each.

For example, I decided to include a directory on my site containing links to my clients sites. I set the deadline for two weeks, completed it and set another goal.

For me, it is easier to develop one step at a time rather than set out a final destination. I've found in the past that choosing your destination at the begining of the trip will usually land you in the wrong place when you actually get there.

We had a discussion here a while back based on the "what if I were hit by a bus" scenario. I realized my wife didn't even know (not her fault!) the password for her e-mail account. I handle every detail of the web aspects of her business and my own.

Since then, I've pulled together detailed lists of the sites we own, passwords, FTP info, and registrar data for each. I also pulled together all of our advertising data and put it into a file. My wife now has copies of all of that, along with the name and phone number of someone who would know what to do with it in an emergency.

We're just small operators with a few sites. Anyone larger either should have some sort of comprehensive plan or better be working on it...
