I'm a freelance work from home web designer and business has been a bit slow recently so contemplating what advertising options might be best to inject a bit of business. Was thinking about a selective mailshot to local businesses (introductory letter or maybe an advertising leaflet). Wondering if this is the best way to go for best bang for buck/pound. Any thoughts?

Direct mail is very expensive.

If one in 100 people that received your mailing actually came to your site, and they cost $.45 each with design, printing, and post, that is the same as paying $45.00/click. Maybe one in 20 visiting your site will buy services, so it would be $900.00 per customer. Is it worth it?

How about networking or giving a presentation at your local Chamber of Commerce?

I think it really depends upon geographical location like in India hiring up marketing professionals is the best way to get business unlike seacrh engine ranking way in developed countries.
But worth a try if a big deal clicks, patience is required for sure

Another issue with direct mail is there are often long lead times.

I've heard of people having success by searching for companies in their area with an outdated website and picking up the phone. Have a chat to them ask about their site and it's goals. Then ask if they're happy with it, what they wish it could do and doesn't etc. Use that to make a nice pitch.
