For those who are self-employed web designers, just wondering how/if you promote your business other than on the web (e.g. newspapers, trade mags) etc.

I do a bit of non-web advertising when I need it, but difficult to gauge sometimes where the business actually comes from (I don't tend to make a point of asking) web or networking or word-of-mouth or paper-based advertising.

cheers

i think most seniors here are addicts to seo and ppc. afterall this seems to have the highest ROI right now

it may be quite interesting to have a drop down list asking how your customer found you. Have this optional though. It might help you to work out where you should be concenrating more.

My husband and I started a database design consultancy / computer training company in 1997. Not an extremely far cry form a Web design company, I think... what worked for us should work for you.

We tried radio, billboards, coupons in those mailed books, company URL printed on everything, etc.

There is no doubt about it... networking in the community is the best for us. Neither of us has the temperment or the time for it, so we hire it done. Mr. Personality works full-time telling everyone how great our corporation is, but we tech people get to be modest. He goes to every local ribbon-cutting, every chamber event, and everyone knows his name.

Nothing else, except the Web, ever did much. Somebody's got to get out there and meet - belly to belly.
