I have left one of my more obscure domain names go out of registration with a US co. It now say it is detagged when I run a search . How long do i have to wait until i can re-register it with a new domain registartion company based in the U.k ie when does it come availiable in the public domain again?

You must be talking about a .CO.UK domain. I don't know much about them yet. But there are some good UK domain experts around here.

CHC's comment right here could be found to be depressing for you.

Things have moved on considerably since my highlighted comment above. The great news is that Nominet have now started releasing large chunks of detagged domain names and some very valuable ones indeed are being released on a daily basis. I've secured some very valuable domains for clients in the last few days including single word generics!

In a case where you are the original registrant of the .co.uk (or .org.uk) domain you don't have to wait for the name to "drop".

All you need to do is to send a fax to Nominet asking them to "retag" the domain name to a specified Nominet member registrar. I have the letter in the approved Nominet format, if anyone needs a copy just email me for it. I am not touting for business, you may use the letter with any UK registrar that you want.

By the way, I forgot to mention, if anyone thinks that they don't need their cctld because they already have the .com, think again!

Have a read of [webmasterworld.com...] , a sobering tale!

CHC is correct in that Nominet have started dropping names ... but it is difficult to tell when a domain name will drop ... if it is currently detagged keep an eye out for when it becomes suspended (the whois output will have something saying "*** This Registration has been SUSPENDED ***"). When this happens the domain should become available again usually in 6-8 weeks.
