Hi

I bought a domain name from yahoo domain service and i want to give it to my friend. I believe it is impossible to trandfer ownership without paying some agency some fee so is it possible for me to sell this domain for $1 to my friend? what are the specifics of this transaction?

totally lost as to how to do this.

thanks
Mike

Generally, the simplest way to transfer a domain "to a friend" is to have the friend open an account with the same registrar and "push" the domain into his/her account. This assumes that a push is possible and that there's not fees for a push.

Some registrars are goofy and charge large fees for inter-registrar transfers. Read the agreements.

Transfers out are also simple under the latest ICANN regs.

If he/she is a friend you could simply update the DNS, knowing there's other details to handle - such as renewals, etc.

Pushing a domain always works for me, when i'm moving domains over from within one registrar account to another. I am not sure if Yahoo charges you to do this.
The other way is to transfer it out to another domain registrar.

You can find many domain registrars who will transfer the domain for you, for around $7.95 US a year. Of course your friend will pay the $7.95 when he signs up with a registrar and initiates the transfer. And he can also pay you the $1 to gain ownership from you.

Last I checked Yahoo doesn't allow ownership transfers within. Your best bet is to transfer it to
another registrar instead.

Whenever a domainer has an issue about control of a domain, such as this, the best approach to getting the "official" answer is 1) to read the applicable TOS:

[domains.yahoo.com...]

[order.sbs.yahoo.com...]

and,

2) to contact the customer support department of the company with whom you are doing business.

Yahoo isn't an ICANN accredited registrar. [icann.org] If they were their reliance on MelbourneIT to provide domain registration services, as outlined in the TOS, would be a bit anomolous.

I've never used Yahoo for domain services. I know some hosting companies actually register domains "for" their hosting customers - which opens up a can of worms when that customer isn't happy with the hosting services.

It would appear that any transfer would have to take place via MelbourneIT - but read the TOS for yourself and place the call or send the email to confirm this. It appears that your friend might want to open an account with MelbourneIT - or any other registrar - and handle the transfer in whatever manner they choose.
