Hi,

There is a domain name that I am intrested in but it taken and parked <snip>.

As you can see below from the whois the name expires soon.

What steps can I take to ensure I get that domain name when it expires?

I've read on here that back ordering the domain with serveral differnt services will increase my chances.

I just don't understand the point of that?

Whois Server Version 1.3
Domain Name: XXXXXXXX.COM
<snip>
Status: REGISTRAR-LOCK
Updated Date: 04-may-2005
Creation Date: 12-oct-2004
Expiration Date: 12-oct-2005

Since each drop catching service is competing against the other the capture desirable deleting domains you increase your odds of getting in on the action by placing orders with each service.

If you place an order with only 1 service and a different service catches the drop you're out of the game.

Of course, if they're all chasing the same domain you can expect that the game won't be over on the catch. Next you will have to bid against other interested parties and make (and pay) the highest bid.

If the name isn't that desirable then you might catch it by using a single service. These days, I wouldn't take that chance unless it was a real junker with no traffic.

Read each drop services TOS. Many only charge a fee if the capture is successful. That fee, however, may be your maximum bid and sometimes the bidding runs into $$,$$$ range - well into it.

Better watch it...I just got burned by godaddy's domain grabber. The domain can have an expired page showing and be auctioned off weeks ago.

PS - I strongly recommend you stay out of the domain name game since there are several losers and only one winner.

In my experience .. back ordering does not really work .. In fact I'd call it a con ..

Others have other views, but I have specifically used GD and ended up getting the domain myself when they were telling me it had gone and was not possible...

I did what they said was not possible..<snip>

It is that kind of business, unmonitored, unrestricted, can do and say what they like and there is no body there to control their actions.

Hi,

I've been involved in the domain name game for some time now. I have much better luck making contact on my own and dealing directly with the owner.

I've had nothing but bad experiences with back ordering and name catchers.

I'd have to agree there. But I also contacted a domain holder once and he didn't know what he was going to do with the name. Then, a year later, instead of contacting me, he dropped it and it's stuck in some reseller...This is a game I just don't have time for.
