I am building a site for a friend's business. When I register the domain should I put it in his name or mine since I'm the one that's actually registering it? What about all of the hosting/admin contact info?

I have built a few sites of my own for personal use but don't have any experiece how to set things up with a "client" even though he's a friend.

Thanks for all thoughts on this.

Welcome to webmasterworld!

Whenever I build sites for others I register their name as the domain owner then my details for maintenance and administration

Hope this helps

In deference to your friend, be careful here.

I have had several clients come to me when the friend/relative/casual aquaintance who registered their domain had packed in web design and moved on to something else. The hassles over domain names have been considerable.

In some cases the peeson who was the admin contact had become uncontactable, in others they had let the domain they they used for the admin contact email go and no longer had a way of using it. In others all of those applied, plus the disappearing designer had registered the domain in his/her name.

So be sure that the admin contact email is one that will still be around when the registration term is up, that someone will have ready access to the CP if you move on, and so forth.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll put the domain in his name but use my email address for all contact info. Does that sound alright?

Yep, just make sure the email address is one you are going to hold on to long term.
