Hi,

I am thinking of starting a new site for a specific type of product thats name is made up of two seperate words, i.e. as a made up example lets say the product is 'car wash'

I want the domain name to help build my ranking for the term 'car wash'.

If I choose the domain carwashworld.com then people will link to my site by including the exact targeted keyphrase 'car wash', i.e. link text would be 'Car Wash World'

However if I choose the domain carwashworld.com I will be restricting my site scope to covering 'car washes' only. I would like to call my site carandwash.com where I could have a section on 'cars', a section on 'car wash' and a section on 'wash' which gives my site content a greater scope.

However if I choose the domain carandwash.com then people will link to my site by not including the exact targeted keyphrase 'car wash', i.e. link text would be 'Car and Wash'

If I choose carandwash.com instead of carwashworld.com will it reduce my ranking for the key phrase 'car wash' or will the search engine ignore the 'and' (because it is such a common word) in the the link text and just treat the link text as 'car wash'?

I really need to target the keyphrase 'car wash' so if putting 'and' in the link text stops the search engines reading it as 'car wash' then I would rather go for carwashworld.com

Hope this is all understandable.

thanks,

Nick

Hi Nick;

It's not exactly in this way that the thing works;
No one of the two mentioned option will works,simply because SEs don't extract the word "carwash" from the word "carwashworld" (altough Google works with partial matching that however means that it can recognize the word "car" in the word "cars", but is different).
If you want to get a sort of ranking help from your url, than it should be formulated in this way: "www.car-wash.com"; the key-words have to be separated.
However that could help you primarily with the SEs not with your inbound links because is very difficult to keep the control on the anchor text used by the "linker" web sites : In fact nobody can stop me to use a customized text to link your site ,such as "car services";If I'm the linker site I'm free to decide the best text on my pages!Isn't it?

Finally, bear in mind to consider a lot of other variables to get a good ranking for your site.Extend your efforts.

Yes but if my site is called Car Wash World (domain www.carwashworld.com) then the search engine would pick up 'Car Wash' as the link text would be 'Car Wash World'.

On my current site (in the top 3 on each of the major UK search engines for the term 'widget') 95% of link exchanges that I do link to my site by it's site name (not its domain name), i.e. in the above example this would be 'Car Wash World' or 'Car and Wash'.

Sure thing but just want to squeeze every opportunity out of the domain name (and thus site title link text), it has worked well on my current site :-)
