Hello,

I am strating a website for a Young Enterprise company that would like to promote their goods via the internet. This means the site has to be online for only one year.

As it is only short term I though a simple setup where I run the website from my own house would be a good enough option. The problem is that my IP address is dynamic and the company want a .co.uk or .com address!

I want to know if I can get my computer (Win XP Pro / IIS) to associate itself with the URL or if there is any other way...

Thanks for any help in advance.

steelegbr,

Yes, there is a way, but IMO it is more trouble than it is worth.

Pay for hosting. In addition to "web space" you will get:

  • A straightforward DNS setup
  • A faster connection
  • 24-hour monitoring (you won't personally have to stay awake and watch the server for a year)
  • Redundant network connections
  • Fire protection
  • Uninterruptable power
  • A help desk

    And most important:

  • Someone else to blame if it fails

Home hosting is not for serious e-commerce merchants.

If you don't need too much space (and you're on a budget) there's some free hosts that will host your domain for free aswell. Try searching for free cpanel hosting.

Set the domain up on your free space with your ISP ( usually around 100 megs )..buy the domain name ..set up ahidden redirect using the domain name to your space ...
or depending on the size of the site just buy a hosting pack with free name...

Or, if you're set on running on your own computer, there are several dynamic DNS services that will handle the DNS for you to point the domain to your ever-changing IP address. If you're on a broadband connection, this is a cheap way to run the site yourself. However, as some have pointed out, you will not have the benefits of a hosting company, but you will have the benefit of keeping more money in your pocket.

What is your upload limit? I've got roadrunner with a 384Kbit upload...

If you're going to try and host a site from your house, I'd suggest making it strictly text with very little in the ways of graphics...and any graphics you use to be very small, under 10KB or so.

Depending on how much traffic you get will determine how much of a hassle after setup you get. Most folks don't have a 384Kbit upload and unless you're on a T1 I think even with a light site it would just be easier to get a cheap host.
