The name I'm interested in is owned by some outfit called UltimateSearch which is said to own around 100.000 of domain names. The page I get at that domain is the same as ultsearch.com - a standard landing page generated from an XML feed, with no indication they're willing to sell it.

Has anyone bought any names from them? The only contact available seems to be their whois contact email. Is it a good idea to write to that email?

why are you hung up on a particular domain name. Why not just get one that is similar to it or that ends with a .org, .net, .info, .biz etc. Regardless of what name you choose, you'll still have to take the same steps to promote the site. It's the hits that are important, not the domain name. Did you know that godaddy.com is selling .biz names for $4.95/yr.?
