Are there any web tools that let you search for all domains registered by "John Doe"? (or any other whois info)

ie. So if I know a certain domain is registered by "John Doe" and I want to search for other domains also registered by "John Doe", how would I do this?

There is only one accurate way of determining all of the domain names a person owns and that is through thw whois record. That is going on the assumption that the person has put all accurate information in the whois record in the first place. There is also something you should know about the whois record. Each registrar maintains there own whois record. The bad news is that in order to get a definitive answer to all of the names a certain contact has, you would have to get a hold of each registrars whois record, combine them and then do a search for the name of the entity you are searching for. The good news is that registrars must, by virtue of their contract with ICANN, provide you with their entire whois database. The downfall to this is that they are allowed to charge up to $10 000 for this info. Needless to say with over 20 000 000 .coms reg'd what you are asking is no small thing.

As was mentioned earlier in this thread there are services that buy these lists and sell you the info for a pretty penny. One I knwo of charges $3/record. If this is something that you would really like to do and you have a bit of cash to spend to make it happen let me know. I have had others that have been interested in a similar thing and I would be willing to get together abunch of us in order to defray the costs associated with this project.

Yes, used to be free but is now charged for. This just gives you domains at the same IP, which is not what was wanted. Some domain parking sites for example have thousands of domains at one IP, all with different owners.

Also, it's not always the case that a multi-domain owner would put all their domains on a single IP. Maybe most of them, especially if they are unused, but they probably also have some hosted elsewhere (or just on a different IP on the same box).

I dont know anything about owning tons of domain names etc..I only have one for my own use. I'm just reading and learning things in here out of curiosity.

I know a service that does this for you.

But it is not automated. You have to email them the name. They charge a few bucks to run the search.

I'd recommend staying away from that. You could hit a server with hundreds of sites and then have to sift through all of them. Between my 9 class c's I have about a thousand sites, and only 3 of them belong to me personally. You could get lost in a loooooong search!
