Problem: Who was my registrar

Can't transfer hosts without knowing who was registrar?

My friend's host has gone away. Been down for a month. No one is answering the phone. I'm afraid he's been had.

He's decided to setup hosting on a different company and transfer his domain name. Problem is he doesn't know what registrar the host used when they registered his domain name for him. We did a who-is and found that HE is listed as the admin, etc. And the fly-by-night host is listed as the technical contact (phone number listed is disconnected). We just need to change his technical contact info and server info, but how?

I've checked register.com and NS. Neither have any record of him in their DB so I'm assuming the registrar is some off-the-wall place.

Anyone have any ideas?

There's always [internic.net...] - they return the whois server info

I think scott has it pegged.

The problem was NS wasn't returning who the registrar was on the domain. Went to a few other registrars and found it.

Right. The whois info didn't say who the registrar was. All contacts were the same person....not the registrar. It was trial and error to find the registrar. I found a site (can't remember where, sorry) that listed all the registrars, and went thru them one by one.

Why not try [allwhois.com...] that is who i use and all the information on different registras is shown there
