My customers can't get to our New Server

Perplexed why this is ONLY happening with certain users

Hi all,

I switched Web hosts about 2 weeks ago, and changed the DNS pointers to the new server about 10 days ago using Network Solutions account manager.

The vast majority of users ARE getting the new site, but I'm getting a few people whose browser is still pointing to the old server, which is now cleaned out. So these people are getting a blank empty index listing off the old server.

Why after 10 days, would this still be happening to a small percentage of my audience?

Please offer any suggestions, advice, or explanations.

Gene,

I can think of a couple of possibilities:

1) Their ISPs cache DNS improperly.
2) They have their own personal/corporate proxy server (possibly software-based) which caches DNS.

It's a good practice to leave a site up on the old server for a couple of weeks before removing it completely after a move.

Thanks for the explanations & advice!

As per your suggestion, I've gone back and posted a special message on the old server to inform those people how to get to the new site using our static IP address.

I hope that's a good idea.

Also, from what you've said, can I assume that "eventually" everyone will get pointed to the new server through our domain name?

Just a follow up...

We're in southern United States. We determined that AOL & BellSouth subscribers had no trouble being pointed to the new server.

However, anyone using Cox Cable Communications as their ISP, were still being pointed to the OLD server.

This certainly makes sense, as Jim mentioned earlier.

I'm just wondering, Do you think that the Cox subscribers will be pointed correctly in another week or two?

I would have thought it should not take more than two days, so if it has already been 10 days, contact Cox and ask them to investigate
