Too many file extensions

With all the possible file extensions one can use: .htm, .html, .shtm, .shtml, .cfm, .asp, and so on, and so on, do you think it can be a problem for site visitors especially if they're trying to type in a specific URL? Most people think of .htm or .html, not the others. Just curious.

Yes, I do think it can be a problem. I try never to publicize an URL in print that needs a file extension — I always make them directory indexes, for exactly that reason.
