From a previous thread, i got beaten by win2k, kt133 and alcatel usb mdm.

dropped down to ms98 still buggering around, so resolutions.

started checking out options.
1. PCI adsl card - BT say one exists, i can't seem to find any
2. 3 com router - expensive, but not sure if it can do it.
3. Icon Viva - mdm with ethernet and usb connections, not sure if it can.

The question that i need an answer too, in regards of the BT business openworld service, is do either the 3com or the Icon viva which are both pppoa and pppoe enabled, do the job, or does any body else have any other router/lan or adsl mdm's that can solve my dilemma's.

Price is important, this is only a home connection.

For some background, the original discussion was at [webmasterworld.com...]

Did you try getting the latest drivers from VIA, istall VIA drivers, then install video, then sound, then usb drivers in that order.

If not, go with 3com pci and alcatel 10/100base

If not, then go back to intel...

Sorry, not much help.

caine, I don't recall seeing a mention of which motherboard you're using. It occurred to me that you may be unknowingly sharing your USB IRQ with another device. [viahardware.com...] has a section entitled "How do I avoid IRQ conflicts?" The page and site are geared to the Abit KT7 board but the IRQ sharing principles discussed could well apply to your board.

I'm thinking your USB port and another device may be unsuccessfully attempting to share an IRQ. Strip the system to minimum hardware and see if the USB modem will work properly. If so, add components until it fails. Modern PCI cards are designed to share IRQs but early ones are not and some share better then others. By carefully choosing which components share IRQs thru slot selection and by identifying those that don't share well, you may be able to get the hardware you presently have working.

Hi Dave,

It is striped completely, i always build systems up, the only things on the sys are video and scsi, the board is from QDI and i have tried all combinations. I am going to buy a router, though not sure which one

Either a 3com, Cisco, Viva or Netgear. Though its out of the Cisco and the 3com, 3com is £320, just going to get a price for the Cisco - i fear more expensive.

So 3com will probably win the day, which in retrospec is probably better as i won't have to worry about setting up a lan with a usb mdm as the net connection, rather a router/hub.

Thanks for the advice.

caine, If you have a pci ethernet card and on adsl, I have an extra alcatel modem. It will probably never be used unless I sell it cheap to someone.

$20 plus shipping, 30 day money back

I'm not in the hardware biz, it is an extra I had from an old service 8 months ago. When I moved and subscribed to the new service here they included the new modem.

caine, if you're using power management features, ACPI demands an IRQ, conceivably the ACPI and USB could be conflicting, it's unlikely though. More likely is a SCSI/USB conflict.

Also, I saw a suggestion this morning about using an externally powered USB hub to avoid current limits, especially needed if your power supply doesn't provide at least 300 watts.

As to a hub/router, PriceWatch.com is the absolute best place for discount mail order hardware in the US. I'm not sure how it will work for the UK though...

caine ...

i'm wanting to upgrade to a new computer, just wondering if you found out if this problem is only with the kt133

or if it affects other athalon configurations??

seem to have been on hold on bt all morning and unsure if i can trust their answer when i get it.
