How to start affiliate publisher campaigns?

Please let me know if I am in the wrong place for I am a newbie and still learning.
I have bought and read handful of materials related to affliate program, ad networks and buying ad space which gave me an idea --somewhat a jagged understanding but lack the EXPERIENCE to making it right. Also I have exposure in a very successful internet marketing firm from a technical perspective but have been held back from attaining some of administrative, sales, campaigning and investment experience regardless of the successes I have contributed (sadly there is lesser regard for the technical people there). I don't have a big budget at all (only about a $1000) is why I fear of the risk I may expose myself having I lack the skills and know-how to survive this ever-growing industry. I am interested in publishing campaigns from azoogleads.com linkshare.com, cj.com and more but somewhat weary on the right way to take on the making deals for ad space with prospective websites. I also understand the CPM, CPA, CPC, PPC concept of publishing campaigns and somewhat the concept of 'renting ad web space at cpm basis (which is my most troubled area). Would anyone be kind enough to be able to give me heads up on how I can invest the right way without falling victim to the sharks of the industry. Thank you!

I would suggest investing in PPC advertisements. Send your traffic to a page that is highly optimized to make a conversion.

As for your budget, just make sure you watch your ad campaigns very carefully. You may loose a couple dollars if it doesnt work out, but if it does, you can increase your daily spending and maybe turn that $1000 into $2000.

I think I see what you mean but I must ask:
What indicates a highly optimized conversion rate of a given site? And in respect to traffic, what controls a definitive traffic flow to a given site? I do understand keywords and linking play major roles but are there other factors that can stir high conversion traffic flow? I guess I'm trying to ask what is the best take on target marketing when campaigning off of ad networks in ad space sites?

I feel the above inquiries were offbeat and maybe too general so I try again but please let me if I'm asking the wrong questions. I am very new to the game and wanting to learn how to start profitable campaigns with out falling out of place with making money.

How would I know of good PPC campaign besides adsense?
Also how can I find out who might offer ad space on PPC bases?

You can place PPC advertisements at many places such as google adwords, overture, goclick, 7search, kanoodle, etc.
