<% Dim en en = Request.cookies("wisenut")("een") if en = "" then en = "ISO-8859-1" end if Dim url, urlLen, url1, chr url = Request.ServerVariables("HTTP_REFERER") if( instr(url, "http://www.wisenut.com") = 0 ) then if url <> "" then Dim fs, fileName, objFile Set fs = Server.CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") fileName = "d:\Referer\" & month(now) & "." & day(now) & "." & year(now) & ".txt" Set objFile = fs.OpenTextFile(fileName, 8, True, 0) urlLen = Len(url) chr = right(url,1) if(chr = "/") then url1 = left(url, urlLen-1) else url1 = url end if objFile.writeLine(LCase(url1)) objFile.close end if end if %>

That's what I'm getting on their homepage. Doesn't look too good...

<added>Gone now, guess it was temporary glitch. Not very professional though</added>

It happens to me every so often, only at school though.

:) Last time I looked (earlier in the week) they had a bunch of adult listings for what was definitly not an adult search, which was very frustrating.

When you have cr@p filling up your SERP's, there is no way you can be taken seriously.

I don't care how cheap they figure out how to make their results, spider wise, from Grub, etc.

Won't work. You need total quality in an engine these days to impress anybody because it is way to easy to go back to Yahoo, MSN, or Google.

Even Inktomi these days has a very high quality to their SERP, imho.

On par with Google, which is why I get so much traffic from MSN, I think. Why would you even think of switching if it was 'good enough'?

And...WiseNut for them, that is about their only hope for a large contract. Unless if Yahoo switches, MSN suddenly jumps fully to Overture...

then WiseNut would be out in the cold, nowhere to go, and no way to grow.

Would seem very unlikely that MSN would create another GOOGLE by switching completely to an OVERTURE solution. In my opinion overture have shown their true intentions by their buying not only search technology but a PORTAL.Big picture could be when WISENUT is up to scatch MSN building their own OVERTURE with LOOKSMART phasing out OVERTURE and MSN delivering the killer blow to GOOGLE by buying AOL.Just a sunday theory from down under.
cheers.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, charge. Nice to have you join in the discussion.

MSN -> moving in closer with LookSmart? Could be.

But at the start of the thread, we're discussing WiseNut problems which seems to counter any thoughts -> for the time being -> of any buyout.

WiseNut is virtually unknown, outside a small group of people. However, I'm sure that with their cleaned up interface, and the feed back, they will continue struggling to improve.

Things could change, if they can put it together...

Jeremy,
I think WISENUT will stay to a large degree unknown as I believe the ramp up of WISENUT is for LOOKSMART to offer portals a full service which is unbranded.Seems to me the portals are very wary of potential competition and much to their credit GOOGLE made great gains by also selling their brand coupled with excellent search.I also believe that the mantle of most popular search engine has to do with best of breed results and fashion.Fashion changes.
cheers,
