I just verisign which listed my site at hotbot and msn. for long my site was between 10-20 in both searchengines. My last change was to add a short description in the title like
(toys are us )- "the worlds largest toystore"

It improved my ranking to 3rd in MSN but in hotbot the site vanished!

A seach in hotbot on the webpagename found the site. For the first time i had also spidered the hole site and follow each link. Do you think my ranking cahnged because of the change in the title or for another reason?

Depends on the criteria MSN uses in it's results for your keywords.

Sometimes the first results are "web directory". That means that one or more sites are listed in Looksmart.

Other times it is "Web Pages", which would be the Inktomi sites. INK still uses keywords to rank sites, so don't forget those.

Then there's another category that gets mixed in, but I forget what that is.

INK and L$ are the major ones, though.

An interesting exercise is to do an INKTOMI Pure Search and see how many of your pages are indexed. Also check your logs for Slurp to see where it is going.

I guess what happend is that hotbot suddenly ranked my page as spam, cause changing the headline back returned my ranking...

looks like I passed the allowed amont in keyword density.

By pure search you mean just seraching my webite?

That seems to be another problem as no searchengine yet lists all my pages...

while you are at it... how about the meta keywords. Is it always bad if you use a keyword say 35 times?take the example "energy" and a renewable site, the metatag could be:

<!RE meta keywords><META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="environmental science, renewable energy, renewables, sustainable energy, energy from sustainable sources, energy from renewable sources, biomass, biofuels, energy from waste, cogeneration, combined heat and power, chp, district heating, geothermal energy, geothermal power, heat recovery, hydroelectricity, hydro-electricity, hydro electricity, hydro power, wave energy, wave power, tidal energy, tidal power, wave and tidal energy, energy instruments, energy monitoring, energy metering, air monitoring, emissions monitoring, landfill site, landfill, landfill gas, solar radiation, solar power, solar energy, wind measuring, passive solar energy, pv, photovoltaics, solar thermal energy, wind energy">

here energy is an essential part of expressions like solar energy, wind energy, energy efficiency...

The question is will the metatag still be considered as spam?
