Hi,
in my stats for one of my freehosted websites I found the following click:

www1.searchhippo.com/hl/hl-page.php?u=http://www.example.com/&q=example

I tried to verify this click and found that my links on that website are overlapped by a insertion of freeservers.com saying that "remotelinking for free hosted websites is forbidden.
When I go directly to my website [example.com...] The page is shown properly.
Does this mean that searchhippo.com is changing the content of my website when one of his customers is searching for it? Does like kazaa searchhippo insert chaged links on my website?

Regards
Jonny

this is somethign i have been experimenting with. the highlighter (which you can turn off by clicking the 'remove frame' link) does indeed modify pages. It will occasionally add a 'base href' tag and it also will put some css tags around the words you have searched for in to highlight them on the page.

I just put this feature out and of course i would say that it is still somewhat experimental. I'm guesing the issue here is that they check the referrer to see if it is them when requesting images so people don't 'steal their bandwidth'. I don't know any good ways to get around it unless i proxy the images also (which doesnt add any value otherwise). Anyway, I'm stil not sure of the usefulness of the feature, so i might turn it off (or default it to off)

I wouldn't remove the feature, but I would turn it off by default. Maybe make a checkbox under the main search box.

Since you're already doing this, you may want to add something which checks the language and send it to SYSTRAN or something for translation if it isn't in English.

kmarcus runs SearchHippo, and replies to serious questions about his search engine very quickly - I was stunned when I sent an e-mail to SearchHippo asking about this new feature and got a reply within a few hours.

I was working on exactly the same problem, but trying to figure out how to allow this new SearchHippo highlighting feature to work with one of my sites which also had image blocking. I guess my site is now more up-to-date than freeservers.com, huh? :)

I like the highlighter, and that's why I modified my image blocking to allow SH to access my images for the purpose of sending me interested visitors.

Thanks KM,
Jim
