Welcome to WebMasterWorld!
Engine54 is run by a web marketing company. 24 7 media. They bought an SEO firm for a record $95 million in stock, at the time...though that amount was since changed, as the stock price fell.

As for a search engine, look elsewhere I would recommend looking elsewhere. Check out Teoma, or WiseNut, or Gigablast. That is, if you are looking for a 'real search engine' with an algorithm, results, and the whole bit. As far as I know, Engine54 (formerly 'bestoftheweb' for all you history buffs) has never run a spider and utilized an algorithm to classify unstructured hypertextual data from the web. :)

If you want a pay for spidering engine like Altavista or Inktomi [webmasterworld.com], or pay per click search engine [webmasterworld.com], check out those two forums.

Just as an FYI, this forum is generally intended to be used to discuss search engines, which is why I pointed to the other forums, in case you would like to discuss engines which are mostly bought and paid for results providers.

As to your question, though: any good? Well, my opinion is that if I'm shopping I'll use Overture (to browse, don't recall actually buying from a site I found through their service) and if I want info, I'll use Google, then Wisenut, and then Teoma.

Hey, no worries. Thanks for posting.

I didn't mean to come off sounding rude. My apologies if I did sound so.

As for New Zealand, that's a market I've never really looked into...when I get some time, I'll try to check those out.

Cheers.

Hi doofy, welcome to webmaster world

Since I've been here, I've noticed a few threads like "india, 9 search engines, 2 directories"...sort of thing, one for each country.

Perhaps someone knows of a thread that focused on the Pacific region / NZ area?

We haven't had one on just New Zealand, but there was a recent thread on Australia's Top10 SE's [webmasterworld.com] a little while back over in our Asia and Pacific [webmasterworld.com] forum.

Also, try the site search link at the top of each page...there are a few New Zealand threads out there.
