Excite@Home to file for bankruptcy?

With an ear to the ground...

Hey folks,

Was just down in L.A. doing a little work, and of course I always havie an ear to the ground!

Little birdie sang a tale of woe! Ground murmurs have it that Excite@Home will be filing bankruptcy this Wednesday.

For me this will be a sad day, only because of my long love for this search engine.

I've long worked my sites for her, and I remember her in days of glory. To see her end up like this does indeed bring a frown to my face.

Anyone want to buy that ole engine and breathe some life into her? Get a little biz-dev working, and get some new user features and make that thang sticky again?!?!?!!

Wishful thinking... :(

Honestly, I can't remember the last time I saw Architext spidering. Their database is, what, 8 months old?

It is sad to see any search engine go under because it means there is less competition for those who are left.

I always thought at&t would breath some life into them, but it seems like the search engine was just the bath water with the cable access baby (@home).

Welcome back. I'm glad to see you made it back safely. God knows, you have more courage than I do! I've started booking Amtrak trips for everything.

I've heard the same things, but then again, we both know a lot of the same "birdies." :)

I know many will agree -- you and Dogboy among them -- but I've never had great luck with Excite. While their passing (which I believe we're about to see) will be sad in the same way the passing of InfoSeek and the old AltaVista were sad, I don't know that it will leave a gaping hole in the market.

>Honestly, I can't remember the last time I saw Architext spidering.

I've not noticed any difference in their spidering. From Friday's logs:

Luv ya hun,

Was good to talk to ya. Any word from your daughter yet?

You are correct about Dogboy and myself though, we seemed to have the pulse of that engine and always did. I can only hope that maybe someone WILL breathe life into the engine again.
I can hope can't I? ;)

Excite@Home flirts with bankruptcy [dailynews.yahoo.com]

Sources close to the Redwood City, Calif.-based company say Excite@Home will file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection late this week or early next week unless it receives an unexpected cash infusion.

I still get some too. I can't figure why they don't find a suitor. Surely one of the big se's would look to purchase that traffic.

Just heard on the 10 o'clock news, they filed in bankruptcy court this morning. The following story was that ATT submitted plans (to gov't) to purchase them.

Lord save us! I hope THIS one doesn't involve our grandmothers again! :)

The daughter's fine, still on high alert but still in the U.S.

*wondering if DR would be interested in buying Excite* :)

*cough* Excite will fold..., thread in Webmasterworld Alternative Search Engines, from April, 2000 [webmasterworld.com]

I'd say that this whole thread is a little *ahem* redundant...after all, as RCJ pointed out to me a while back, we have a really good batting average around here. :)

Still sad, though, to see an engine like that go under. I have some promotional pages which drive a lot of traffic. Oh, well. The future of search is looking brigter and brighter. I have a theory the only reason some portals still have traffic is joe user doesn't know how to change his (or her) home page. ;)
