Which search engines are submittable to?

Several free services offer autosubmission to metasearch engines such as Infospace & Metacrawler, and other 'engines' such as IWon, Alexa, AOL Netfind, & Yahoo-Google.

I cannot see how it is possible to submit to the above.

Are these free services out of date, are they silly, do they think I am silly, or are there some things I should know?!

Thanks for the elucidation!

Those services know that many people out there are not web savvy.
There are only very few meta engines that take submissions.
Automatic submissions, which is what those services offer, are generally not advisable. Rule of thumb is: do important submissions by hand. For everything else you might, if you have a lot of pages to handle, use a software.

Also namniboose, for submissions to any but the majors, you'll want to use some web-based email set up specifically for that purpose. One time early on, before I knew better, I used an automated "free" submission for a site and got bombarded with spam email.

Thanks Heini & Marcia.

Are any of the engines I mentioned submittable to by hand?

Infospace & Metacrawler do not seem to have their own web directory, Alexa I cannot find as a search engine, I cannot find an add URL on IWon, and Yahoo-Google is just Google's results on Yahoo, isn't it? (not submittable-to in itself).

Thanks for your feedback.

Meta-search engines use the data from other search engines, so they don't have their own submit. Iwon uses Inktomi, but you can't submit to them, it has to be done elsewhere.

You'll want to submit to:

Alta Vista (lotsa luck for getting included, but go for it anyway)
Google (they'll find you through a link from a site in their index)
Lycos (use FAST data, but spider instantly so submit there, too)
FAST (alltheweb.com) - don't miss this one, plus they update frequently
Excite (updates sooner or later, mostly later)
Direct Hit
Hotbot (for Inktomi inclusion, but check the Inktomi forum about this)
Northern Light (no traffic, but OK, why not)
Wisenut (new and up-and-coming)

Yahoo uses their Directory first, and then Google results, covered by Google submit.

If you're in ODP [dmoz.org] you'll get found and listed all over the place. VERY important, you can go through our directory forum for more info.

Did I forget anyone?

It's weird how Submit Corner help you to submit to all these unsubmittable engines!

Yes, our site is listed in all the majors. Finally got a good listing in O.D. and a reasonable one in LookSmart (thanks to reading postings on w.m.w. about who to approach!) and got re-instated in the top 20 on FAST after being mysteriously demoted to #172 for several months.

Also found it worth getting paid listings on Inktomi and Mamma (GoTo is on probation - hits are rather expensive)

I'm just trying to cover all the bases with other less important engines but I don't think I've had any hits from any of them. Probably should just concentrate on improving keywords and optimising my site for the BIG ONES.

Is there a list of FAST partners somewhere?

We were on Yahoo for several months and then we got dropped - probably because I mistakenly re-submitted via Top Dog (dammit). I waited several months before re-submitting because I was re-making the site so I'm hoping they will have forgiven me by then!

Vacation rentals on Maui's north shore are very competitive, even more so with the current recession, so I've got to get it out there!

Many thanks for a wonderful forum.
