Excite does a terrible search

Excite and search word backpacks

I did a search for backpacks on Excite. I expected the usual top companies like Jansport, Eagle Creek, and Eastpak to show up. Instead I get a pharmaceutical company, a collection of wolf photos, spas and pet food listings. Does anyone know why I get such strange results?

I am not sure why ? Though certainly worth finding out why.

I have been monitoring excite, checking on the competitions placement on a few of my target keyphrases, (still awaiting crawling of my site) and a couple of days ago, they all seemed to dissapear. The relevancy of some of the searches, was to put it mildly - crap. Though, on others, it looked like the hand of god had just laid down the rules, a massive company, possibly, made a deal with excite for certain keyphrases, got number one position, 2, 3, 4, then one or two of the competitors, i am used to seeing, then a load of irrelavent listings afterwards, with opto-ed competitors pages, that were at #1, #2 and so on being shifted down 15 to 50 places, under some very irrelavent pages.

Excite, is bizarre.

If you couldn't find a pharmaceutical company by searching for backpacks, how could it ever get any traffic? :)

Excite seems to keep shooting itself in the foot. A couple of years ago, they were a very strong #2 to Yahoo. Then they went for the better part of a year without updating their database. Users left in droves. Lately, they seem to be going through some more gyrations which will probably cause more of their traffic to go to Google or others.

Is it just me, or does it look like Excite just updated?

I noticed tremors from excite, as well, though i think only url verification.

As the apollo, has come back on four seperate occasions.
Could be wrong.
