Trying to Register with the search engines, and slowly coming to grips with who powers who in the world of search engines. I have found out that i have three major questions.

1. Using the pay option with looksmart, i was forced into the uk directory and not the global or any other, can i get in too the general directories with the same domain ?

2. I inherited the site written in 1996, re-designed it completely, not understanding the virus like spreading of a site over time over the internet, hence i am trying to get listed and AOL and inktomi, are listing very dead links. I have used the canada.com free option to update inktomi - will this work ?
This has further ramifications - as i am sure you can imagine - the directories, such as Dino, UkPlus and more are listing a dead site.

3. Does anyone have a rough idea of the indexing schedules of Google - Fast - Inktomi - AV - Excite - Lycos - Northern Light. Approx dates rather than the length of cycles.

I'm glad you are "coming to grips with...search engines."

In response to your questions, the places on the board to get this information are as follows:

1. The looksmart, etc. al forum here:
[webmasterworld.com...]

2. The UK and Ireland Engines and Directories forum here:
[webmasterworld.com...] (Sorry, I'm in the US, and I haven't done my studying yet to see what works and doesn't in the UK.)

You might also look at my response to one of your other posts regarding Inktomi here:
[webmasterworld.com...]

3. Wow. That's a mouthful to try and deliver all in one go, but I'll give it a shot.

Excite: Spiders frequently if you are in the db, if not, a wing and a prayer might get you in, or just opt for paying looksmart. They are a partner of Excite, and you will get guaranteed inclusion in their version of the directory if you do. After that, look for link popularity to boost your rankings, and keep your pages focus very narrow, and stick to the topic at hand on each one.

Northernlight: Takes about 6 weeks to get their spider, gulliver, to show up the first time. After that, providing you make it into the db, they spider every couple of weeks, depending on their available resources, and how important they view your pages.

Google, Fast, Inktomi, AV: each has their own specific forum here, but a quick run down as follows:

Google updates every 30-45 days,

Fast will spider and index in 2 weeks, they regularly crawl the entire web every 45 days,

Inktomi you basically need to pay to get in, or have really good link popularity, and submit those linking to you first, and then hope,

Lycos will take data from Fast, see above for their main db, the popular results are powered by directhit, which takes 2-4 weeks to get listed,

As far as Approx dates, which is what you asked, I don't believe anybody has that data in even approximate form outside of the engines themselves. They don't update on a constant or predictable model. :) It's why we're here, always talking about them...
