What's Alexa offing which yahoo, google api does not acomplish?

Using established SEs API you can't influence ranking - thus when you use API you get results that are no different to those that people can get on respective search engines, and when that's the case, how will you differentiate - not with fancy looking frontend surely?
But it has to be said that creating your own indexer/searcher is a few orders of magnitude harder than just using API.
