I saw Gigablast as a backlink. Took a look and saw it was their ODP based directory. They appear to be ordering sites based on their star system? Does anyone have any information about the criteria for the star rating system they use?

That is interesting. I can't figure out what the basis for the stars is.

Complete speculation here, but every big WWW search engine has to have some kind of query independent rank of a page based on incoming links. Google uses PageRank to order ODP results, and I think it would be reasonable to assume that GigaBlast uses GigaRank (made up term) to order its own ODP results.

Well, offering some sort of ranking/ordering system would be one way to add some value to the raw ODP data (and also, perhaps, to avoid a dup content penalty...).
BTW, they do seem to use content that is pretty old; and they don't use the ODP attribution correctly ("$cat" should be "expanded" to the correct category).
